General Information
Performed: 24 hrs.
Turn Around Time: Results available within 4 hrs of receipt of specimen.
CPT Codes: 83986
Performed By: Hematology
Clinical Utility: Measurement of certain biochemical parameters are used to determine whether the fluid effusion is a transudate or an exudate. The presence of transudate implies the presence of hydrostatic or colloid pressure disturbance without pleural disease involvement. In contrast, exudate implies infection or a neoplasm causing increased capillary permeability. pH <7.3 is suggestive of parapneumonic effusion. Levels >7.3 suggest effusion complete resolution following antibiotic therapy. The test results should be integrated into the clinical context interpretation.
Unacceptable Conditions: EDTA or Citrate collection tube. Stool samples are unacceptable for pH testing.
