Note- lithium toxicity can be acute, chronic or acute on chronic. Toxicity can occur at levels ≥1.20 mmol/L especially in patients on chronic therapy or with new drug interactions, changes in sodium intake, dehydration, increased dose, pregnancy or sudden change in renal function.
Acute on chronic toxicity and neurotoxicity can be difficult to diagnose based on levels alone due to lithium storage intracellularly and in adipose brain tissue.
Clinical Utility: Can be used to monitor for efficacy and tolerability. Toxicity usually: >1.80 mmol/L
